Designed to improve physical education and improve students' health and fitness levels.

Commit-2B-Fit is dedicated to improving student health.  Our goal is to educate students about making healthy life choices.  Though our physical education program, and help of faculty and friends, our students are learning skills and knowledge necessary to be healthy today and stay healthy tomorrow.

Our programs and curriculum is made possible through the Pep Grant.  A government grant that provides our school with the financial and informational support we need to promote healthy living.  The grant is ran through the Chilhowee R-IV School District.

We provide in and out of school programs that offer opportunities for students to learn.  Through the support of Chilhowee Schools and the teachers, we are providing physical education that improves student learning.  Our newsletters and website offer more specific information regarding programs, school integration, and health curriculum.

Presenting Your Commit-2B-Fit Team:

Director: Joe Murphy

"I am a graduate of Chilhowee School.  I first attended Missouri Valley College where I studied graphic design and played football.  I later transferred to UCM and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in K-12 Physical Education.  Through college I had the opportunity to coach at a couple different high schools, one being my hometown Chilhowee.  After graduating college I taught and coached at several different schools and colleges.  I’ve been in Jefferson City, Westminster College, Clinton, and even Tulsa, Oklahoma; and I’ve coached basketball, golf, baseball, and football.

One of my favorite experiences was coaching College Basketball, but through all the exciting opportunities, when the dust settled, I felt called to be back on the farm where I could join my family farming and hopefully be a positive part of my hometown community in Chilhowee.  I am currently the director of Commit-2B-Fit, a physical education teacher, and boys high school basketball coach.  Running Commit-2B-Fit is an amazing experience.  I love leading students to understand the importance of fitness and health, and I enjoy seeing the excitement of students when they get to use the amazing equipment provided by Commit-2B-Fit."

Assistant Director: Kerry Murphy

"I came to Chilhowee the 2nd semester of the 2011 school year. I was the Director’s assistant for the PEP Grant and a part-time social studies teacher. During the 2011-2012 school year I became the Assistant Director for the PEP Grant and a full-time Social Studies and Communication Arts teacher for Chilhowee. Currently I am still the Assistant Director for the PEP Grant and a full time Social Studies Teacher. I enjoy working with the Commit-2B-Fit program and am especially excited to see the changes in our students’ eating and activity habits.

When I first came to Chilhowee I had no idea what the PEP Grant was and what I was getting myself in to. I attended training in Las Vegas and learned all about the Pep Grant and realized that this grant was a huge deal and there were a lot of things that needed to be done to ensure that our school would get to keep the grant. I was extremely overwhelmed when I returned to Chilhowee and I had pages and pages of notes to share with Joe Murphy (the Pep Grant Director). That first year was a struggle, but we managed to make it work and now as we begin our third year I am confident that we have met our goals of giving our students the education and resources necessary to become healthy and active children and that they will carry this into their adult live."

Curriculum Coordinator: Julie Johnson

"My name is Coach Johnson, and this is my second year as a PE teacher in Chilhowee. I graduated Highschool from Leeton in 2003. After High School I attended Central Methodist University on a basketball scholarship. I later transferred to UCM where I graduated with a degree in Health & Physical Education.

As a physical education teacher my goal is to equip every student with the knowledge, skill, and self-confidence in a variety of physical activities so they will lead a healthy & physically active life. I am so proud to be a PE teacher at Chilhowee and a member of the Commit-2Be-Fit program that promotes physical activity and health in youth."

Media Coordinator: Biz Lavender

"I have been teaching since August 2012.  I graduated from University of Central Missouri in 2011 with a degree in Art Education.  I working towards a MFA in painting and hope to be teaching for many more years.

This is my first year working with Commit-2B-Fit.  Mr. Murphy asked me to help create more awareness of Commit-2B-Fit through newsletters and a website.  Working with this organization is great because I believe in teaching kids healthy habits.  I firmly believe that children will learn better if they first have physical health."
